When Echocardiography Reveals More Than Just Numbers

A 74-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of heart failure. Echocardiography performed using the Vivid system from GE HealthCare revealed dilated cardiomyopathy with severely reduced left ventricular (LV) systolic function, complicated by a mural thrombus located in the basal inferoseptal region.

Key echocardiographic findings:

  • Dilated left ventricle with severe global systolic dysfunction
  • Severely reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF)
  • Mural thrombus in the basal inferoseptal region

This clinical case highlights the importance of carefully assessing each myocardial segment during echocardiography—particularly in patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction, in whom mural thrombi may be easily overlooked.

Echocardiography continues to play a pivotal role not only in quantifying ventricular function but also in detecting complications that may significantly influence treatment strategies and patient prognosis.

The Vivid range of dedicated cardiovascular and general imaging ultrasound systems consistently delivers clear and precise cardiac imaging. Combined with advanced FDA-approved AI technologies, Vivid can serve as a powerful clinical support tool, helping physicians achieve greater diagnostic confidence in the challenging field of cardiovascular care.
